The Market

This popular buffet hotspot at Hotel Icon proffers up deftly executed Southeast Asian favourites

Among buffet afficionados in Hong Kong, Hotel Icon’s The Market ranks highly—and it’s evidenced by the fact that the restaurant is packed for
every session, full of hungry diners eager to get their fill of South East
Asian delights and treats from the (in)famous durian dessert selection, from durian pancakes to durian mochi. Most tend to load up at the fresh shellfish station, which heaves with lobsters, crab legs, mussels, clams and langoustines, before moving onto the vibrant salad and cold cuts station with its array of crisp vegetables, charcuterie and oozy burrata. Save room for the Straits specialties, such as curry laksa that is rich with coconut milk and fragrant with laksa leaves, and the Hainan chicken rice—don’t forget a dollop or two of the piquant chilli sauce that zings with vinegar. To cleanse the palate between plates, a soothing Chinese-style soup is usually on offer—chicken and sea coconut, say—and worth sampling, given that the hotel is also home to Above & Beyond, an excellent Cantonese restaurant upstairs.
