The restaurant’s glass ceiling and walls brighten the interior while allowing diners a view of the lower floors of Man Yee Building.Specialising in Shanghainese cuisine, Xiao Nan Guo cooks up homey dishes and classic dim sums. One of the most noted is the pan-fried crispy pork soup buns. Everything the name of the dish promises, the buns deliver, juicy on the inside with a golden crunchy bottom. The soft chewy tops of the buns balance the rich pork filling. Dipped in dark vinegar, it’s a great alternative to rice for those who prefer just a touch of carbs in their meals. Another signature is Grandma’s braised pork belly. Fatty pieces of pork are braised in a dark, sweet soy reduction and lies on top of a bed of mushrooms. While chunky layers of fat can be seen between tiers of meat, the dish manages to not taste overly greasy or sticky. The pork skin is chewy and fragrant, perhaps the best part of the dish. A must-try dessert is the red bean paste and banana pancake. The crispy ‘pancake’ is filled with a lightly sweetened red bean paste and ripe bananas and topped with a sprinkling of coconut flakes and peanuts. Red bean and banana proves to be a surprisingly pleasing combination of both textures and flavours. The soft filling plays a perfect counterpart to the warm, crispy wrap.A modest selection of wines by the glass and bottle. With labels from both old and new worlds, diners have a good range to choose from. Also available are Chinese spirits and Asian beers. Various cocktails, juices and teas can also be found on the drinks menu.The staff is a bit slow; so don’t be afraid to wave your hand for some help.
