Hong Kong has long been hailed as the cultural, business (and lets not forget shopping) hub of Asia, having earned the label of being a destination that seamlessly blends east and west. In part one of our ‘Made in Hong Kong’ series, we profile Hong Kong’s leading global and local brands, and the notable individuals who have driven these companies to their success:

Founded in 1994 by David Tang, Shanghai Tang has brought traditional Chinese fashion into the 21st century with Tang originally setting out to modernise the legendary craftsmanship of traditional Shanghainese tailoring and rich fabrics to craft impeccably cut clothing. With Richemont International SA gaining ownership of Shanghai Tang in 1998, it now boasts over 24 outlets worldwide, with a presence in cities ranging from Macau to Miami, having recently celebrated their 20th anniversary in Shanghai.  David Tang has worked his magic on his more recent projects such as his growing lifestyle store Tang Tang Tang Tang, and other popular hotspots such as Island Tang, and the renowned China Club.

Goods of Desire, or G.O.D, may be known for their cheeky yet clever ‘Delay No More’ t-shirts, but co-founder Douglas Young’s mission for the lifestyle and concept store is rooted in preserving aspects of Hong Kong’s Cantonese heritage, having been praised for their tongue-in-cheek approach to interpreting Hong Kong design and culture.

With over eight locations in Hong Kong, G.O.D is also available in select department stores across the globe. Aside from G.O.D, Young is an artist in his own right. Having trained as an architect, Young has been commissioned to create interactive pieces for Art Basel, most notably the Great Spoon of 2014.

An art deco aficionado, Ronald Abram is the mind behind the eponymous jewellery house located in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. A trader of rare and exceptional gemstones for over four decades, Abram has built a reputation not only for his ability to use an artist’s and expert’s eye but also for their extensive selection of jewellery ranging from period pieces that preserve the artistic qualities of the Art Deco era to contemporary fine jewellery.

With box bags and clutches proving to be all the rage recently, some credit is due to Fiona Kotur-Marin who was one of the first to bring strutured clutches and miniauderies back in style with the launch of Kotur in 2005. Aside from her philanthropic streak and devotion to a number of charitable organisations, the mother of four is constantly modernising classic clutches that are often seen on the arms of starlets walking the red-carpet.

5. <strong>PYE</strong>

PYE’s Chinese character for the brand translates to “flair” – and it epitomises exactly what Dee Poon set out to do in reviving the fading tailored men’s shirt label. As the daughter of Dickson Poon and Marjorie Yang, she inherited her parents entrepeunerial spirit having reworked multiple interpretations of the classic white dress shirt. With a focus on sustainable production methods, Poon strives to create an intelligent brand that is committed to quality without comprising sustainability, and she seems to be on the right path with PYE celebrating their 30th anniversary and having opened a new boutique in the heart of Central late last year.
