The Five-Star hotel owned by Sino Group is housed inside the General Post Office, a heritage-listed landmark

On Friday, The Fullerton Hotel Sydney debuted at the heritage-listed General Post Office (GPO) building, and Sino Group’s Daryl Ng attended the opening ceremony to welcome the Hong Kong property conglomerate’s latest project.

“Our vision for the 416-room hotel is simple: to deliver a unique, exquisite hotel that is synonymous with warm hospitality and one-of-a-kind flair to make guests’ stays more memorable,” says Daryl, Sino Group’s deputy chairman and grandson of the late real estate tycoon Ng Teng Fong. “We seek to provide guests and visitors with signature services as they create their own memories, while showcasing the beauty and heritage of the former Sydney GPO building to a wider audience nationally and globally.”

The luxe hotel’s location has a storied legacy. Completed in 1891 during Australia’s economic boom, the Victorian Italian Renaissance Style GPO is considered an icon of New South Wales architecture. Over the years, the building’s surrounding area was developed into the city’s central business district. The GPO was used as the Australian Post’s headquarters until 1996, and three years later, it was listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register.

Sino Group purchased the landmark in 2017, and promised to preserve the post office’s history while infusing The Fullerton’s contemporary furnishings. Stately rooms and suites are decked out with bluetooth speakers, Nespresso machines and digital tablets. Downstairs, guests can dine at The Place, a vibrant eatery serving Modern Australian cuisine, or enjoy cocktails or tea at The Bar, a swanky lounge. Better yet, the hotel is a stone’s throw away from other cultural landmarks including the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge.

As part of Sino Land’s revitalisation programme for the GPO, The Fullerton will be offering complimentary heritage tours starting November 1, which will be open to the public who can learn more about the building’s legacy.

This is the hotel brand’s second outpost after The Fullerton Singapore, which opened in 2001 and also occupies the city’s former General Post Office.

“The Fullerton Hotel Sydney and The Fullerton Hotel Singapore share rich histories and important cultural significance,” Daryl says. “As we set the stage for an unforgettable experience in the heart of Sydney, we look forward to writing a new chapter with the community together.”
