These traditional transitional coats are weather appropriate all year round

It might be over a hundred years old, but trench coats are a classic for a reason. Enduring the twists and turns of fashion fads and seasonal trends, these coats have stood the test of time and remain a wardrobe staple. The traditional gabardine material still used today was invented by Thomas Burberry in 1879, and the coat style was popularised during  the First World War when an adapted version became an official part of the British Army's uniform. An excellent protection against wind and rain, the trench coat also proved to be a lasting fashion statement for men and women alike, with stars from Humphrey Boggart to Audrey Hepburn confirming the coat as one of the most essentially stylish items of the century. With twists on classic cuts, a fresh take on fabric and bold new colours this season, there are plenty of tributes to the trench trend to suit every style.
