Classic designs for wedding invitations, place cards and menus call for a cream or pastel-hued background paired with an elaborate scroll along the border. If you wish to glean inspiration from the art world instead, don’t be afraid to use more colour.

“If you want to use a lot of colour but still retain a soft look for the wedding invitations, you can use a mix of pastels such as light mint, lilac, sky blue, blush and peach,” says Vicky C, founder of The Theme Wedding Design. “You still achieve the same colourful effect, but in a more subtle way.”

The colours can be used in a watercolour wash design for a painterly effect, as a background for the invitations, place cards and menus.

There are countless ways to draw inspiration from the art world for desserts served at the reception—from arrangements of multi-coloured macarons and eclairs, to cakes featuring an ombre pattern or a striking design that are matched with sugar flowers in a contrasting colour.

Flowers in striking colours of bright pink, red and violet, matched with other blooms in contrasting colours, are a good way to turn floral arrangements into more of a statement piece. Another way is to choose varieties that have a unique look.

“The Mona Lisa flower is quite striking, it has a darker heart surrounded by beautiful red or white petals and adds an artistic touch to a bouquet,” says Vicky. “Some of the varieties also come with a band of white around the middle.”

Many couples like to include photos from their engagement and pre-wedding photo shoots around the venue. If your chosen venue comes with a spacious pre-function area for guests to mingle in, the photos can be displayed in a way that is similar to a photography exhibit.

“Instead of a collage of photos, you can select a few photos to be displayed in a bigger size and have them arranged almost like a photography exhibit along a wall, all of them framed and spaced a little further apart,” says Vicky. “It is also important to make sure that there are some spotlights so the photos will stand out.”

Allow guests to tap into their inner child and showcase their talent by providing some colouring pencils alongside the guestbook, so guests can draw something as well as write a heartfelt message.

“We have also done weddings before where we’ve set up a huge piece of canvas at the reception, for guests to draw on,” says Vicky. “At the end, you get this organic piece of artwork that the couple can frame and treasure.”

Another piece of artwork that can be created on the day, and one that will definitely add a unique twist to the occasion, is a painting that the couple can produce soon after they have said their vows and become husband and wife.

“We came up with an idea that after the ceremony, the couple can head to an area where they can throw paint, or pull at a lever to spill paint in different colours, onto a canvas. It creates this abstract painting that is a memento of the moment when they’ve officially become husband and wife,” says Vicky. “And of course, we will make sure that the outfits, especially the bride’s dress, remains pristine!”
