1. Omega

When the Seamaster Planet Ocean was launched in 2005, it wowed collectors with a brightly coloured orange bezel and strap. This year, the model pays tribute to its roots with a 43.5mm stainless steel case brought to life with an orange ceramic bezel ring. Several models from the collection are made in collaboration with the GoodPlanet Foundation to aid coastline restoration projects.

Breguet has taken its longstanding commitment to saving marine life a step further with the announcement of a five-year partnership with the Race for Water Foundation. Founder Abraham-Louis Breguet spearheaded the brand’s maritime timekeeping efforts after being appointed horologer to the French Navy by Louis XVIII in 1815. The Breguet Marine Dame features an eye-catching motif that reflects the flow of waves on the dial.

Launched in Bali with the support of Surfers Squad member Kelly Slater, among others, the Superocean Heritage Ocean Conservancy Limited Edition celebrates Breitling’s partnership with the Ocean Conservancy, a non-profit environmental advocacy group. A beach cleanup initiative was organised as part of the launch, which resulted in hundreds of kilograms of plastic being removed from the beaches of Bali.

Since it launched the Fifty Fathoms diving watch in 1953, Blancpain has worked to preserve and achieve a better understanding of the world’s oceans through its Blancpain Ocean Commitment diving watches. Its third and most recent series, limited to 250 timepieces, was unveiled last year. For 2019, the brand has unveiled a 500-piece Fifty Fathoms edition that takes design inspiration from the iconic 1960s Barakuda model.

The non-profit Cousteau Divers was established by marine researcher and IWC Schaffhausen icon Jacques-Yves Cousteau, who dedicated his life to the protection of endangered species. The Aquatimer Chronograph Edition Expedition Jacques-Yves Cousteau has been made in collaboration with the society to help establish marine protected areas. The special edition’s sea-blue dial and coral-red seconds hand pay tribute to Cousteau’s lifelong passion for the ocean.

The British-based Manta Trust Charity is the beneficiary of part of the proceeds generated by the sale of Carl F Bucherer’s Patravi Scubatec Black Manta Special Edition. The organisation uses the funds to research the behaviour of manta rays off the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico. Much more than a feel-good accessory, it’s a robust diver’s wristwatch equipped with an ultra-light titanium case and helium release valve.
