What does it smell like? ‘Cold water falling on hot chalk’, apparently

Azzedine Alaïa is a firm Hong Kong Tatler favourite, and when we caught a whiff two months ago that he would be launching – more than 30 years after starting his brand – his very first fragrance, we knew we wanted it. And now, Alaïa Paris the fragrance is available at Lane Crawford.

Crafted in collaboration with Beauté Prestige International, the perfume is an olfactory representation of the Alaïa woman – free, unique, and a contemporary romantic. The bottle itself – a striking black glass design with a cap that calls to mind a seamstress’s spool of gold thread – was created by celebrated French industrial designer Martin Szekely.

The head perfumer on the project teased in a May New York Times article about what the fragrance would smell like: cold water falling on hot chalk, or “airy notes and pink pepper; freesia and peony; animal notes and musk”, according to the paper.

It sounds a lot like petrichor, that sublime earthy freshness in the air after first rainfall. Given the extended dry period during which we were left pining for this perfume’s release, it seems all too appropriate.

Alaïa Paris is now available exclusively at Lane Crawford stores and online
