From Gucci Beauty’s geometric patterns to Chanel Beauty’s nod to its iconic Paris location, these are the make-up brands that are a joy to use and collect because of their eye-catching packaging

Some of the earliest evidence of make-up trace back 5,000 years ago to Sumerian and Egyptian civilisations, where rouge and kohl pigments were kept in colourful clay bottles and beautiful boxes—even then, storing products in visually appealing receptacles was a hit.

Flash forward to more modern times, British cosmetics company Stratton sold ornate powder compacts in the early 1920s, and even when packaging became simpler following the invention and popularity of plastic in the 1960s, the idea was still to make the appearance of beauty products as beautiful as the products themselves.

Many make-up brands in today’s world is turning to more minimalist packaging that reflects the ethos of sustainability. However, there are still others that are also enticing us with gorgeous packaging. Here are nine brands touting bolder designs—with the intentions of being refillable to also be environmentally friendly—that can double as art pieces on your vanity.

1. Dries Van Noten Beauty

Dries Van Noten used to only be a fashion brand, but in November it expanded to include beauty and fragrance products that would inspire people to enjoy a sense of play in their beauty routine. The Belgian designer leant into his affinity for colour and pattern, so lipstick tubes and perfume bottles are sleek and chic with their mix-and-match designs and chrome finishes.

2. Chanel Beauty

Chanel has a long history of designing leather goods and clothing that represent the height of luxury, and it often incorporates those motifs in its make-up products and packaging. The brand’s latest lipstick release, 31 Le Rouge, is inspired by the maison’s iconic location in Paris at 31 Rue Cambon, and features a glass tube with gold details that mimic the curves, light tones and windows of the architecture.

3. Gucci Beauty

Gucci Beauty’s product packaging, with its geometric motifs and golden elements, is reminiscent of the art deco period. This year’s holiday collection features a red and blue retro pattern across compacts and lipsticks, which are perfect for the vintage lover who likes all their items to match.

4. Florasis

For the lovers of ornate, opulent and Asian style of design, Chinese brand Florasis offers a unique twist on product design. It incorporates traditional Asian motifs into both the packaging and the products. Think eyeshadow palettes shaped like a fan or lipsticks and powders engraved with intricate motifs depicting scenes from ancient times.

5. Prada Beauty

Luxury brand Prada has launched a make-up line reflecting the maison’s design codes, such as funky triangle motifs of the logo and sleek chrome packaging in silver and gold finishes that are usually seen on its handbags’ hardware. The collection consists of eyeshadows and lipsticks so far, and the colour selections reflect the vibrant pops of pigment that appeared in previous clothing collections, including red, chartreuse and purple.

6. Lisa Eldrige Beauty

British make-up artist Lisa Eldridge has been in the industry for two decades, having done looks for models, celebrities and editorials alike. She also has a love for collecting vintage make-up, which has served as inspiration for the packaging of her eponymous make-up line that includes gold tones and elegant bottles, compacts and tubes that feel modern yet give a nod to vintage aesthetics.

7. Kjaer Weis

Sustainable Danish brand Kjaer Weis, which came onto the beauty scene in 2010, is best known for its refillable packaging concept. Silver compact cases twist open to house lip and blush products, and the asymmetrical shapes make for eye-catching items that feel like more than just make-up.

8. Isamaya Beauty

British make-up artist Isamaya Ffrench has fully embraced bold statement-making designs for her products. 9. Pat McGrath Labs

Legendary make-up artist Pat McGrath set the tone for creating beautiful make-up looks throughout her career, and this elegance seeps into the aesthetics of her make-up line.
