We sat down with the South Korean actress and pop-star, who came to town for the launch of Estée Lauder’s Beauty Sleep Lounge event

Yoona first debuted as part of K-pop group Girls’ Generation back in 2007, as the main performer of one of the most successful Korean girl groups of all time. Since then, the star has embarked on a solo music career before transitioning into acting. Her success as an actress—including starring in Exit, one of the highest-grossing films ever in South Korea—has made her a household name worldwide. The singer-actress’s popularity has landed her multiple endorsement deals including with Innisfree and Estée Lauder, for which she is the brand’s Asia Pacific ambassador.

You’re in Singapore today to celebrate the launch of the Beauty Sleep Lounge event. What’s your evening ritual to achieve a good beauty sleep?
I believe that it is really important to do a skincare routine every day, of course— to cleanse the skin. But most importantly, to ensure that my skin is healthy, I’ll apply Estée Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair Serum every day on top of my basic skincare routine.

You’ve played a wide variety of characters as an actress. Is there a character make-up look that you’ve enjoyed the most?
Yes, I did a lot. It is true that I did a lot of different styles and characters, the most recent drama being King The Land. Sa-rang (Yoona’s character on the show), or Sa-rang style is a look that a lot of people have loved. So that's why I would like to recommend her style. So as you can see in front of me, there's a foundation cushion and lipsticks. These are actually the products we used for Sa-rang’s look. So if you use these products, you can actually achieve the make-up look that Sa-rang has in the drama. In Korea, there's a term called 꾸안꾸 (KuanKku), which means “You did make-up? It doesn't look you did”, so it’s a very natural look. So if you use these products, you can do a similar natural yet complete make-up look just like Sa-rang.

Sa-rang’s beautiful smile is often commented on in the drama. What’s something in your daily life that makes you smile?
I think there are small but significant moments that make me smile, such as when I see something funny, when I eat something delicious or when I have casual conversations with my friends. When I’m home, I think my puppy Leo is the one that makes me smile the most, when I see him I just can't stop smiling.

Christmas is approaching soon, is there an Estée Lauder product you would like to recommend as a gift?
If I have to choose just one, it would definitely be the Advanced Night Repair Serum because that is Estée Lauder’s signature product. I believe that anyone can use this product at any time, it's very simple and easy to use. It will make the condition of your skin better, by improving the foundation of your skin. And that will make your make-up look even better. Using the serum will improve the external condition of your skin and you will look beautiful, which is why I would recommend it.

Is Yoona more of a morning or night person? If your schedule lets you sleep in the next day, how would you spend the night?
I think I'm more like a night owl and so if I have nothing scheduled in that evening, I think I'll just do nothing and roll around on my bed and rest at home. Because even though it might be quite repetitive and simple, my mind is actually more relaxed at home. So I just want to relax, not think about work and just enjoy my time relaxing comfortably. Something I might do is watch movies till late and then sleep in late the next day, something like that.
