Enter the star ingredient of Chanel's series of films “Beyond the Jar”: vanilla planifolia. Among 117 varieties of vanilla from around the world, the vanilla from Madagascar was selected by Chanel scientists as the legendary plant with extraordinary revitalising properties.

At the heart of Sublimage skincare, this vanilla is the key to its anti-ageing formulas. A vanilla orchid that only blooms for 24 hours, vanilla planifolia is carefully pollinated by passionate artisans, one by one, in its natural environment. It takes not only patience but a respect for nature for how extremely rare this vanilla is—it takes 60,000 green fruits, i.e. 160 kg of fresh pods and 14,000 fresh flowers, to obtain 1kg of ultra-pure enriched planifolia.

When the vanilla planifolia arrives at Chanel’s Paris-based laboratory, researchers analyse every step of its life cycle and identify the skincare benefits from each part of the plant to create unique, pure and powerful active ingredients through the House’s customised extraction processes.
