By the time Elizabeth Taylor got hitched with her Cleopatra co-star Richard Burton in 1964, she had already had four weddings—and four elaborate bridal looks. It’s not surprising that she chose to keep her fifth one simple, opting for a yellow chiffon babydoll dress created by Cleopatra’s costume designer, Irene Sharaff. For accessories, Taylor had a crown of hyacinth flowers and lilies of the valley woven into her braided up-do, as well as a diamond and emerald Bulgari brooch pinned onto her dress.

25-year-old Sharon Tate was a delightful sight when she wed filmmaker Roman Polanski in a silk moiré babydoll dress. Her minidress exuded an air of ceremony with its high neck and puffy, leg-of-mutton sleeves, and Tate also chose to cover her legs with a pair of white stockings that ran all the way down to her Mary Jane mules. Her bridal look was quintessentially ‘60s, and even more so with flowers in her hair.

For her wedding to Andrea Dotti in 1969, Audrey Hepburn turned to her friend and fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy to create a pale pink minidress. Despite its simplicity, the dress was still crafted with the precision of Givenchy’s couture training, evident in its perfectly shaped funnel neck and slightly flared sleeves. Finally, instead of a veil, the Breakfast At Tiffany’s star chose an elegant scarf to adorn her head.

Jane Birkin may have popularised the crochet dress, but it was Raquel Welch who declared it a worthy wedding look. The American actress said “I do” on Valentine’s Day in 1967, wearing a little white dress that showed off her tanned, long legs. After the ceremony, Welch threw on a knee-length white fur coat that exuded Hollywood glamour.

Together with her partner John Lennon, Yoko Ono was an icon of the counterculture movement in ‘60s America, and the Beatles bride certainly dressed the part on her wedding day in 1969. Her Mod-style minidress was free of frills, and instead of heels, she wore a pair of knee-high socks and white sneakers. Her bridal ensemble was topped off with a hat and sunglasses, shielding her from the sun in Gibraltar.

Vegas weddings aren’t always tacky, as Lily Allen demonstrated. The British singer was undeniably chic in her Dior mini dress, featuring an elegant bateau neckline, a belted waist and black buttons. Supermodel Cindy Crawford intentionally transformed into the ultimate beach babe for her Bahamas wedding with Rande Gerber in 1995. Her fuss-free bridal look comprised an off-the-rack John Galliano ivory silk slip dress, and little else. In an interview, Crawford explained her low-key look: “I didn't actually walk down the aisle because we walked each other down to the beach, but for me, I wanted my husband to see me and I wanted him to be excited about the bride he was seeing.”
