Chanel has launched the Chanel Culture Fund, a global programme of initiatives and partnerships that aims to support innovators across the arts in advancing new ideas and greater representation in culture and society.

The fund seeks to champion equality of voice and give visibility to global game-changers at a time when the arts provide a vital source of inspiration and perspectives on the way we view the world. It builds on Chanel's 100-year heritage of arts patronage, in the spirit of Gabrielle Chanel's role as a patron and convener of the arts, reaffirming the house's commitment to the freedom of creation and human potential.

"The Culture Fund represents Chanel's belief in the central importance of individual creativity in driving innovation. At a time when we are navigating our way through complex new environments around the world, we know that artists generate transformative ideas that help us envision the way forward. Chanel has always championed the vitality and advancement of the arts, and we now expand that tradition through the Fund with a focus on supporting cultural innovators and pathbreakers who are mapping out what's next," says Yana Peel, global head of arts and culture at Chanel.

The fund will primarily focus on two areas which include the Chanel Next Prize and a series of international partnerships with institutions and organisations. The Chanel Next Prize is made up od individual awards of 100,000 given to 10 artists in music, dance, performance and visual arts, who are radically excelling and redefining their fields. It will be open to artists of all ages, genders and nationalities. The award will provide funding for transformational projects as well as access to a mentorship and networking community specifically curated by Chanel. An international advisory board will nominate and shortlist the inaugural recipients. Further details on the Chanel Next Prize will be announced later this year.

Chanel is also committing to a series of long-term partnerships with leading institutions around the world. The partnership will create new programmes that will support innovation in creative and cultural thinking with projects intended to fill in missing narratives, foster collaboration across disciplines and help proper transformative ideas that benefit culture and society as a whole.

Some of the projects include a partnership with the National Portrait Gallery in London, titled "Reframing Narratives: Women in Portraiture", led by Flavia Frigeri, Chanel's curator for the collection, a newly appointed role specifically for the project, to research and enhance the representation of women in the collection and on in the gallery when it re-opens in 2023. Another partnership is with the Underground Museum in Los Angeles, where three fellowships will be awarded to curators innovating their field and broadening cultural audiences through the Noah Davis Prize.

Chanel also partners with the Centre Pompidou in its native France for a multi-year programming initiative focused on collaborative explorations by designers, artists and scientists to create new ecologies for sustainable cities and communities. Similarly, the partnership with GES-2 in Moscow includes a three-year annual mentorship programme and residency for game-changing Russian women artists working at the intersection of theatre, dance and video, to coincide with its opening. Aiming for a global scope, Chanel is also establishing new cultural partnerships in Asia, with a particular focus on China.
