It’s the last month of 2020 and we just can’t wait for the holidays and revel in all the festivities. While it might be difficult to get into the festive spirit this year, Christmas is still our favourite holiday and with no doubt, the perfect excuse to get all dressed up and have something new to post on the ‘gram. From changing up your hairstyle to trying out new nail art designs, there are plenty of ways to glam up your look for the holiday season. If you want to stay on-trend and look your best this Christmas, why not also try experimenting with the latest make-up trends?

Whether you’re planning a small social-distanced gathering, hosting a virtual party or simply want to make yourself look and feel fabulous this season, these are the best Christmas make-up ideas to try for 2020.

Dewy skin

Glowing skin layered with strobe creams and dewy foundations have long been dominating the beauty scene throughout the years, and the dewy skin trend isn’t going anywhere soon, as predicted by Sekine.

A flawless foundation look starts with a clean and smooth canva, and if your skin is dry, clogged, your make-up won’t last long. According to Sekine, our skin turnover gets slower as we get older, so it’s important to exfoliate the skin or use a peeling solution (such as the Ordinary’s AHA 30% and BHA 2% Peeling Solution) twice a week to remove dirt and clear dead skin cells in order to achieve a smooth base for makeup application.

RMK’s Creamy Foundation EX is one of the best foundations on the market that promises a buildable sheer-to-full coverage with a natural, luminous finish.

Smokey eyeshadow and winged eyeliner

Obviously the focus for holiday makeup 2020 is all about eyes due to mask-wearing. “This season, we’ll be seeing more avant-garde eyeliner and impactful eye shadow, and if you want all eyes of the on you, opt for a classic smokey eye look and pair it with black winged eyeliner,” said Sekine.

Try the trend yourself by using Make Up Forever’s Aqua Resist Smoky Shadow and Aqua Resist Colour Pencil. Both products feature a long-lasting, water-resistant formula that will help you blend eyeshadow colours and create winged eyeliner easily. For those who want to give their eyes more definition, use a liquid liner (such as Marc Jacobs Beauty’s Precision Pen Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner) to draw lines along the lower lashes for a bolder look.

Dreamy pink eyeshadow looks

A feminine pastel pink eye makeup look is definitely on our radar this Christmas. “Pink hues have been so underrated during the winter season, and if you’re bored of the standard brown and bronze tones, try doing a lovely rosy eye makeup. A pop of pink will definitely transform a traditional eye look into something that's sure to turn heads,” said Sekine.

To get in on the trend, give Laura Mercier’s Prima Ballerina Mini Eyeshadow Palette a try. Featuring six different gorgeous pink shades, including two pigment-rich mattes, three shimmering shades and a bold pink metallic, this palette is perfect to create a hypnotising look for the festivities. Pro tip: choose and sweep a single shade from the palette or mix a few for your own custom colour all over the eyelid, then apply a darker shade for the outer corner of your eye and add some glitter for a festive touch.

Crystal embellishment

Sparkle addicts rejoice—your favourite crystal-infused make-up look is still all the rage today. “Crystal embellishment on face is one of the biggest make-up trends that has dominated the runways for years, and there’s no sign of the trend dying down,” said Sekine.

Perfect for quickly upgrading your everyday makeup for your post-work parties, those gems can be easily applied on eyes and cheekbones to achieve a show-stopping beauty look. If you don’t want to look extra or too glittery, try applying only one crystal as a faux beauty mark. It will maximise your feminine appeal, too.

Bold red lips

What’s Christmas without a bright and bold red lipstick? Chic and elegant, this universally flattering shade is a winter-time beauty staple that never gets old. Whether it's glossy or matte, dark or bright, a red lipstick will not only complement your skin tone, but will also give you the confidence to impress the guests at all those holiday parties.

“Just because wearing masks have become a norm these days, doesn’t mean the lips should be ignored,” said Sekine. “Red lips are always glam for a night out. If you want to give the illusion of fuller lips, try using a few different shades of red to create your own ombré lip look.” Christian Louboutin Beauty’s Matte Fluid Colour lipsticks are perfect for the party season, which has a creamy yet lightweight texture that glides on seamlessly to deliver a smooth, matte finish. Rest assured that this lipstick won't be smudging at all when you wear a mask.
