The Shophouse in Tai Hang has launched an exhibition based on the documentary "Martin Margiela: In His Own Words", offerings fans the chance to learn all about the designer's life
Lifestyle and exhibition space, The Shophouse, is hosting an immersive exhibition on the Reiner Holzemer-directed documentary, Martin Margiela: In His Own Words from October 28 to November 22.
Curated by Edward Chiu, the current head of creative & content at K11 with past appointments at Hypebeast, Highsnobiety and more, the exhibition explores Belgian fashion designer, Martin Margiela’s work during his time at his eponymous label.
Based on the designer’s hour and thirty-minute long documentary, Martin Margiela: In His Own Words––which was first released in cinemas in November 2019––the exhibition puts a spotlight on Margiela’s journey as a fashion designer; from lesser-known intimate details such as his childhood inspirations, through to when he first made his Paris debut in the 1990s.

The exhibition itself spans over three floors, with the ground-floor showcasing photographs of archival Martin Margiela pieces supplied by Laila Tokio and worn by Japanese actress Nana Komatsu from June 2020 issue of 198201111959 Magazine.
Other Margiela-related pieces from Edward Chiu’s personal archive will also be shown on the ground floor exhibit, including personal mementoes, Chiu’s first Margiela show invite, and exclusive London store opening releases.
Step into the mezzanine space of the building to read the numerous publications from Margiela, then make your way to the second floor to view a selection of apparel and accessories from Margiela’s time at his label, all collected by Tokyo’s vintage fashion store, Laila Tokio.
The third floor of the gallery space is a dedicated screening area for visitors to watch Martin Margiela: In His Own Words. While the full film is only shown in the evenings every Saturday and Sunday from 5:30pm to 7pm––make sure to pre-book your spot here––visitors can also expect to see archive videos of the designer’s career during the afternoon.
