Makeup artist Gary Chung graduated from RMIT in Melbourne with a degree in fine art, and has since turned many a model and celebrity's face into his canvas. As part of our Facetime column, the makeup director of Portfolio Hong Kong School of Professional Makeup shares his top products and secret beauty tips.

What’s a common makeup mistake?

Putting on makeup in a room that has poor lighting. Flaws aren't noticeable in dimmed yellow light, and once you're outside you might find that your foundation is too thick or that your blush looks too red. Use natural light when you can or switch to brighter LED light bulbs.

If you had to give one makeup tip, what would it be?

Using a long-wearing black or dark brown–coloured eye pencil, dot between or under lashes instead of drawing a line on top, then blend smoothly with an eyeliner brush. This will make eyes of all shapes and colours look brighter and more defined.

What are some of your favourite makeup products?

The Lancôme Absolue Sublime Essence Foundation looks and feels just like a second skin. For the eyes, I like to use Estée Lauder Double Wear Infinite Waterproof Eyeliner—it glides on easily, blends smoothly and also lasts all day. To create your dream nose and to define your cheekbones, try Nars Contour Blush in Paloma.

Which makeup trends from Spring/Summer 2017 are you most excited about?

I’m excited about the return of lip gloss, glitter and liquid metallic hues. The shiny make-up looks from Spring/Summer 2017 are not so girly, more edgy and dramatic. You can sweep metallic colours across the eyes and add glitter on your lips.

If you could pack just one beauty item for a trip, what would it be?

BareMinerals Brilliant Future Age Defense and Renew Eye Cream—we have to protect the most fragile area of our face, anytime and anywhere.

What’s your advice to those who regularly use a makeup artist?

Provide details of your dream look to your makeup artist and let them know of any products that you’ve discovered recently and love. Having makeup done by a makeup artist is meant to be a fun occasion, and good communication will bring out your charm and make it easier for the artist to figure out what works best for you.
