Net-A-Porter's Elizabeth von der Goltz's Wishlist for Fall-Winter 2020
Wallets at the ready! As a cheat sheet for your seasonal splurge, we chatted to Net-A-Porter's global buying director Elizabeth von der Goltz to find out what's on her wishlist for fall-winter 2020. From the It-bag of autumn to her go-to Zoom jewellery, keep reading to find out what to buy for the season ahead.
If you could only buy one shoe this season, what would it be?
I’ve already seen a lot of Western references that have been bubbling under the surface for some time, but it seems that we are finally starting to see more of this theme.
There have been a lot of fringe details and cowboy inspired boots during the fall-winter 20 shows so far, such as the amazing ones we’ve seen walk down the Khaite runway during New York Fashion Week. We saw some great must-have boots walk down the runway this season, the chunky Chelsea have the strength and stability we covet when the world feels rocky. A muscular counterpart to fall’s femininity, pair them with your favorite gown and celebrate as fashion marches on.
The new bag shape you can’t wait to carry?
There were some great new Intrecciato bags at Bottega Veneta that I loved. There’s a sense of pared-down practicality at work this season, and Bottega Veneta leads from the front with its roomy, cross-body messenger bag – a slouchy modern spin on sumptuous BV Intrecciato.
Additionally, for this season we saw ‘The City’ bag from Balenciaga re-imagined, a style that has been continually successful for us.
What was the look that made your heart skip a beat when you saw it on the FW20 runway?
Saint Laurent was the highlight of Paris Fashion Week for me this season, as it was filled with exquisite tailored jackets, fabulous masculine overcoats and black latex elements that felt daring, yet still sophisticated.
The tartan, double breasted blazer with a beautiful velvet collar look that opened the show this fall-winter season is a gorgeous piece that we’ll also be buying into.
Your new, go-to Zoom jewellery?
Gold, chunky chains are a trend that continues to grow and that we are heavily buying into. Our favourites are the oversized earrings at Saint Laurent, as well as the chandelier-like ones at Valentino, and Balmain.
An oldie but a goodie—what’s something we should dig up and recycle from our closets based on the current trends? What should we wear it with to make it look new this season?
The new peplum jacket! Originally an '80s style, it's usually discussed with reference to Princess Diana, who had a penchant for them. As seen on the runway, wear with a midi skirt for ultimate ‘lady-like’ chic, or switch things up with leather trousers. A great workwear alternative to those who can’t live without their trusty blazer.
An unexpected accessory/ item of clothing that most people think they can’t pull off but is weirdly flattering?
While a matching bra and cardigan may not be your go-to combination this season, you can still bring a bit of sex appeal to matchy-matchy dressing. Look to Altuzarra, who found seduction in the sweater-set by pairing fine, cropped cardigans––just ready to slip off the shoulder––with coordinating cropped vests in hot red.
Ideally, combine with high-waisted wide-legged pants or a midi slip skirt as a nod back to the Park Avenue princess from which the twinset was launched.
