While Japanese cosmetics industry thrived in the 1970s, skin allergies were a common problem for many women, including FANCL founder Mr. Ikemori Kenji’s wife, whose skin was found to be aggravated by preservatives used in skincare.
What’s so terrible about preservatives? Essentially, preservatives weaken the skin’s function, chipping away at healthy skin and accelerating the ageing process. Instead of glowing and youthful skin, preservative-powered products may result in irritability, affect the tightness of collagen and stimulate melanin production.#
In 1982, after years of research, FANCL, the Japanese listed cosmetics company got its start by introducing the brand’s very first products: 5ml vials of skincare lotion that contained no trace of preservatives or harmful additives—only pure ingredients to enhance the skin’s long-lasting beauty.
Driven by science, FANCL took several steps to eschew preservatives and produce safe, effective products. The Japanese brand set up state-of-the-art labs, developed proprietary recipes, and incorporated hermetically sealed ring caps to keep products fresh.
By 2002, thanks to continuous research and development, FANCL introduced larger bottles of cosmetics products, designed to be a 30-day supply—a convenient and effective way to sell perishable products without any preservatives.
