From Lovechild 1979 to Brogger, these are the Scandinavian brands making the perfect summer dresses

Few brands do easy-breezy summer dresses like the Scandinavian brands and there’s no shortage of them at the spring/summer 2022 shows at Copenhagen Fashion Week. Better yet, they all happen to be sustainably made. Here are our top picks.

Founder Nynne Kunde is known for her voluminous creations with delicate ruching that make her pieces equally flattering and comfortable, but she's now also making her mark for her use of colour-blocking. “When I first moved back to Copenhagen from London, I saw so many brands doing printed dresses and I just wanted to differentiate myself with the use of solid colours to make a statement,” she tells me. The fuchsia tent dress is definitely a highlight of the latest collection.

2. Gestuz

Without being able to travel last year, Gestuz founder Sanne Sehested tells me she looked to her hobbies for inspiration while creating her latest collection, which included horseback riding. Hence, the harness details on structured day dresses as well as printed halter dresses for an evening romp in the fields.

3. Lovechild 1979

It was clear from setting that designer Anne-Dorthe Larsen behind Lovechild 1979 had a Mediterranean holiday on her mind while designing the collection. Set in a charming alley with clothes lines strewn above, models strutted to upbeat Italian tunes while wearing crisp, cotton frocks, the best of which were sprinkled in a cherry pattern.

4. Rabens Saloner

Set at the foot of a bridge with a mirrored catwalk, founder Birgitte Raben was inspired by the multidisciplinary work of artists Gioele Amaro and Olafur Eliasson, who used light and mirrors in their art. The resulting line-up included metallic separates and kaleidoscopic tie-dye dresses in sexy-sleek silhouettes.

5. Brogger

You've most likely seen Brogger’s frothy ruffled gowns on your favourite influencers, but this season, designer Julie Brøgger created her ethereal shapes with drawstring details in even gauzier materials, some dipped in rainbow tie-dye but nearly all in her lovely, signature pastel shades.

6. Helmstedt

New mother Emilie Helmstedt definitely brought a childlike innocence to her latest collection, which was inspired by and filled with motifs from the sea. From hand-painted crustacean prints to pastel quilts, to even plush fish paraphernalia, the lineup was a hedonistic dream.

7. Baum und Pferdgarten
