The K-pop girl group members and Levi’s global brand ambassadors are experts at giving every trend, from balletcore to blokette, their own special touch of va-va-voom

Korean girl band, and Levi’s global ambassadors, NewJeans showed off their individual styles as faces of the denim brand’s 2023 autumn-winter campaign earlier this week, with each member rocking a customised pair of Levi’s signature 501 style jeans to showcase their individuality.

Denim isn’t the only look the group can rock though. In the music videos for songs such as ETA, Super Shy and Cool With You see the five members—Hanni, Minji, Haerin, Danielle and Hyein—serving up a plethora of concept-driven looks that give a nod to trends, while still staying true to their signature Gen Z aesthetics.

Here we look at five styles, from ’90s blokette to Powerpuff Girl, that NewJeans is serving.

1. ‘The Powerpuff Girls’ vibe

To celebrate The Powerpuff Girls’ 25th anniversary, the girl band did a fun collab with the animated TV series franchise in the music video for their eponymous single New Jeans, which shows the girls transforming into tiny animated characters and having adventures before returning to their human selves. Full of playful energy, the video depicts each member in outifts that are colour-coordinated with their animated counterparts. What makes the looks even more interesting is how they are a blend of high-end and street style, by mixing cool-girl brands such as Area, Chopova Lowena, Blumarine and Chet Lo with accessories from luxury brands like Jean Paul Gaultier.

2. ’90s blokette style

The NewJeans girls nailed the blokette trend, which mixes hyper-feminine touches like bows and frills with athletic wear, in their latest viral hit, Super Shy—think Mowalola cropped tops, Simone Rocha floral hairclips and Comme Des Garçons x Nike sneakers. And the music video’s fashion isn’t the one thing that calls back to the ’90s. From fun choreography to the relatable theme of teenage crush and longing, the music video is sprinkled with influences from that decade.

3. Balletcore meets fairycore

The Cool With You and Get Up music videos have already created a buzz for featuring cameos from Hong Kong screen legend Tony Leung and Squid Game’s Jung Hoyeon, but what’s also eye-catching is the seamless blend of balletcore (inspired by ballet dancers’ costumes) and fairycore (inspire by, you guessed it: fairies) in the costume design for the NewJeans crew. The combination of long sleeves, flowing skirts and ribbons transform the girls into ethereal sprites, which complements the dreamy quality of the music video.

4. Gas station girly

Even when wearing nondescript grey boiler suits for the ETA music video, the NewJeans girls’ stylist Yumi Choi manage to make them look edgy, unique and fun. The suits are unzipped to the waist and worn with white tops, or totally zipped up and paired with Nike Air Humara QS, Nike Air Zoom Flight 95 or Travis Scott Air Jordan 1 Retro Low sneakers. Plaited pigtails and cute hair accessories add the finishing touches on the girl-next-door-at-the-gas-station vibes.

5. Dark fairy

ETA also saw NewJeans adopt a dark fairy aesthetic (think fairycore-meets-grunge style), which complements the sassy and somewhat dangerous undertones of the song and video. The girls’ wardrobes feature Sandy Liang tank tops, Shushu/Tong pleated wrap shorts and accessories such as silver bow earrings, Jean Paul Gaultier cuff bracelets and chunky Simone Rocha mary janes—complete with Anna Sui fairy wings.
