As part of his prize, the Japanese designer will be mentored by experts under the luxury giant for a year

Satoshi Kuwata is the winner of the 2023 LVMH Prize for Young Designer, and attended an award ceremony at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris yesterday where he was presented his award by Wonder Woman (2017) actress Gal Gadot.

The 39-year-old founded genderless brand Setchu in 2020, which features functional designs that take inspiration from classic objects and a fusion of Japanese and Western concepts.

“I am delighted to honour [Kuwata] whose designs blend great tailoring and elegance, producing collections that are both streamlined and exquisitely cut,” said Delphine Arnault, CEO of Christian Dior Couture and a member of the LVMH board of directors in a press release.

“I loved that [Kuwata] was a true marriage between nations,” said Stella McCartney in an Instagram story posted by LVMH after the ceremony. “He’s Japanese, he’s spent time in Savile Row in London like I did, so he touched my heart there, and he’s in Paris and New York. I loved his work, I wanted to wear his work. I think he has a beautiful imagination, quality ... he had it all.”

Kuwata’s prize includes a €400,000 endowment and mentorship from a team of LVMH experts for one year, both of which aim to provide opportunities for Kuwata’s next steps in the fashion industry. Previous winners of the Young Designer award include Steven Stokey-Daley of SS Daley, Masayuki Ino of Doublet, and Nensi Dojaka, Thebe Magugu and Marine Serre, who each own an eponymous brand.
