Everyone’s favourite (self-declared) high-functioning sociopath-cum-consulting detective is back on the small screen in 2017 — on January 1, BBC’s Sherlock returned for its fourth season. It’s been a long time coming,  and fans are hungry for more of the gripping crime drama.

For the uninitiated, the premise of the show is as follows: Sherlock Holmes, played by a very compelling Benedict Cumberbatch, uses exceptional intellect, logical reasoning and bold skills of deduction to solve crimes in modern-day London, assisted by John Watson (played by Martin Freeman). The series’ mind-twisting storyline takes major credit for its success, but the show has also received wide praise for the singular idiosyncrasies of its main character.

Sardonic and cold-hearted tendencies aside, Sherlock himself has also become somewhat of a British style icon since the inception of the show. The character’s traditional signatures of Inverness cape and deerstalker cap have since been replaced in this modern adaptation with wool overcoats, cashmere scarves and bespoke suits. The style speaks to a level of dapper charm that can be channeled into a Hong Konger gentleman's wardrobe.

Here, we decode the key points of Sherlock’s attire and point you to the right Hong Kong stores to get the look, should you want a slice of the iconic detective's wardrobe for yourself.

Structured Outerwear

Sherlock’s style has become nearly synonymous to his outerwear — the wool tweed overcoat that he wears, collar popped, when tearing around London solving cases. The very coat in question is the Belstaff Milford coat, which is unfortunately, no longer available. However, there are many options for tailored outerwear in Hong Kong — all you need to mimic the look is a long, double-breasted coat.

A Perfectly-Tailored Suit p01nw794.jpg

Any proper London gentleman would know to get his suits from Savile Row, a street historically famous for its traditional bespoke mens tailoring. In fact, Sherlock costume designer Sarah Arthur got the suits for Benedict Cumberbatch from Spencer Hart, a premium British brand with origins in the area. She once stated in an interview that as Sherlock himself would have likely had little to no interest in the frivolities of fashion, she chose a classic cut with a modern twist, that is, narrow-leg trousers with a slim-cut jacket.

Classic and contemporary work best with Sherlock's style. With shirts, he is often seen in a deep purple colour — solemn but not boring, unique but not overly flamboyant. Sarah Arthur chose a slim-fitting cut for Benedict Cumberbatch to flatter his silhouette. No fuss, no frills for Sherlock, please — not when he has cases to solve.

Even a highly intelligent consulting detective of Sherlock's caliber needs to keep the chill at bay. A cashmere scarf knotted casually around the neck will do the trick. And while you may not need the gloves for Hong Kong winters, in other climates, leather is usually a safe and reliable bet.
