Giorgio Armani’s latest collection for Spring/Summer 2019 saunters into the coming season with a timely message: these looks are for the authentic woman who expresses herself by being herself, in total and complete freedom

Anchored around the central theme of “Shape of Colour”, Armani’s vision seeks to capture in physical form the emotion, intangibility and clarity of colour as a shape. Form factor plays a vital role here as shifting pastel hues, rich silk and glimmering organza permeate the collection’s dreamy, soft jackets, embroidered trousers, elongated gowns, layered skirts and flowing capes.

The inherent structure of the fabrics creates a sense of movement that further underscores the luminescent colours and fluid shapes. “It is the firm yet weightless look of the materials that defines the spirit of the collection: delicate yet full of strength,” the Italian designer says. It is ultimately a celebration of the authentic woman who embodies this weightlessness by being perfectly herself.

The pieces are beautiful and best of all, wearable. Even with such an ephemeral concept, Armani clearly took pains to give the physical collection a diverse range which includes everything from a silky, sporty anorak to a head-turning cocktail dress with a large 3D flower to patent leather lattice sneakers (yes, you read that right).

There are dreamy, tiered gowns and straight-up sexy jumpsuits, but there are also touches of old world glam in the form of cinched satin ankle boots and ruffle collared silk shirts, all of which somehow seamlessly contribute to the collection’s celestial look and feel. Essentially women are without want with these stunning options.

Armani also weaves in an element of play, sprinkling in discreet touches of strong pinks, purples and indigos amongst the collection’s landscape of metallic grays and blues. Coy touches are also embedded into the accessories and shoes, such as a satin pumps delicately flanked with metal hardware in the shape of Armani’s signature, or a large translucent collar adorned with organza ribbon and giant glittering gems.

Then there are the statement accessories, such as razor-sharp lattice mesh jewelled satchels and large sleek shoppers which draw striking yet complementary contrasts to the soft, light silhouettes. “Emotions turn into colours. Colours turn into shapes,” a style note about the collection reads.

Even a quick flick through the collection’s offerings and it’s easy to see what Armani was trying to achieve. “The changing journey in which being and appearing are one” is precisely what the shape of colour is, and who the quintessential Armani woman is.
