After more than a year of indoor isolation, Véronique Nichanian wanted to bring “a sense of lightness, relaxation and freedom” with the Hermès men’s spring/summer 2022 collection

It may have been raining in Paris on the day of Hermès’ men’s spring/summer 2022 show, but that didn’t stop the house from bringing its summery vision to the runway. Here, we bring you five things that we loved about the collection.

1. The collection was fittingly named ‘Double Jeu’, or ‘Double Game’

Far from a straightforward showing of clothes for the new season, men's artistic director Véronique Nichanian wanted to express the idea of duality, grace and fluidity in the Hermès men’s spring/summer 2021 show—whether it was through the textiles used, the function of the clothes or the way that they were designed.

“The collection is an expression of grace, fluidity, and the shifting nature of our lives. It also has a touch of the spirit of sailing as well, as in a response to our need to get away. It aims to encourage people to get out and roam—a desire we all share,” Nichanian said. She added, “I wanted everything to be instilled with freedom, momentum, a duality of spirit. Though open and liberated, at heart this collection is not averse to a kind of bold formality.”

2. “Lightness, relaxation and freedom” were the keywords

There was a sense of freedom that came through the show—and it was precisely what Nichanian wanted to convey. “It is a response to our need for wider perspectives, for the great outdoors,” the show notes read. “It is an invention and reinvention of a wardrobe in which different fabrics are interwoven, and where technical innovation finds inspiration in craftwork legacy.” Nichanian confirmed this carefree note, saying, “We attempted to hone a freer, somewhat looser (though still precise) discourse.”

3. Hermès gave us plenty of bag candy to lust after

What’s an Hermès show without bags? Some of the standouts we immediately zoomed in on were a new version of the classic Bolide bag—now oversized, slung on the shoulder as a tote, and with a print along the bottom that reminded us of how skaters hold their boards—a flat crossbody bag kept close to the chest (literally) layered under cotton shirts, and a large leather-and-canvas tote for essentials.

4. The colour palette of the collection was absolutely delectable

Greyish pink, tender green, celadon-green, algae, pale blue, bright yellow—trust Hermès to assemble the most perfect shades for spring/summer 2022. We’re not sure about you, but we’re absolutely convinced that bight yellow is going to the colour of the season—as seen on the house’s casual jackets and shirts—not to mention the sorbet swirls of orange and raspberry, as seen above. Oh, and pink is back, albeit in a soft, dusky shade that looks flattering on any skin tone.

5. The styling of the collection was ace

Working with French director Cyril Teste (Nichanian’s creative partner for the past few seasons), the show was a visual feast as always, but what caught our attention was the blown up details of the collection that threw the styling of the show into relief. Case in point: The casual half tuck of light cotton shirts in summery shades is something that we’re all going to be emulating immediately.
