Four of Hong Kong’s most stylish sneakerheads walk Hong Kong Tatler through their spectacular collections. Next up is Ryan Sun, who owns a few pairs so exclusive that he considers them works of art.

WHO Ryan Sun, director of business development for Fotomax, has been collecting sneakers for nearly 20 years.

FIRST LOVE “The first sneakers I bought were a pair of Reebok Pumps back in 1990,” Ryan says. “They were white with neon yellow laces and I loved using the built-in pump on the shoes.”

EVERYDAY ESSENTIALS “For day-to-day use, I love Adidas Boost sneakers,” Ryan says. He loves them so much that he has six different pairs from the Boost range.

COLLECTORS’ ITEMS Ryan owns two pairs of sneakers that he will never wear. The first are KAWS x Air Jordan 4 suede sneakers, which have glow-in-the-dark soles and KAWS’ signature “X X” logo on the heel and lace tips. Ryan also won’t pound pavements in his camo-patterned, limited edition A Bathing Ape x Adidas NMD sneakers, which were the result of a collaboration between A Bathing Ape and Adidas Originals in 2016. “Both pairs are like art pieces to me.”

FAMILY AFFAIR Ryan’s wife, Sandee Sun, also has a soft spot for sneakers. “The most I ever spent on a pair was about HK$12,000,” Ryan recalls. “It was for Yeezy Boost sneakers for my wife.”

PLACES OF PILGRIMAGE Ryan’s favourite sneaker shops are both in the US. He loves Cool Kicks LA on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles and Flight Club, which has outposts in New York and Los Angeles. Flight Club has recently merged with GOAT, an online store and app for selling sneakers that Ryan also highly recommends.

HANDY HINT “Carry baby wipes with you in case your sneakers get dirty when you’re out.”

MUST-HAVES “Every collector should have a pair of Nike Air Max, Nike Air Force 1 or Air Jordans.”
