Summer in Hong Kong can be a nightmare for gentlemen and many may feel they need to discard their jackets and opt for more casual attire. However, when casual wear is not an option, I have a few personal tips on ways to remain cool and stylish through the heat.

 Lighter Fabrics

This may seem the most obvious, but it makes a world of difference. Tailors prefer to choose fabric by their weight because they are more concerned on how the fabric drapes on the body than the suitability of a garment in a particular climate and season. Alternative fabrics can be extremely practical, such as wool, linen, silk blend fabric, open-weaved hopsack and fresco - as they are light and breathable. More casual fabrics such as cotton and linen, in navy, mid grey or dark brown are great for a less-formal look but still smart enough to don in the office. A light canvas jacket that's softly constructed with thin lining is also a suitable alternative that's cool and stylish. A Neapolitan style jacket with no padding, light construction and shirtsleeve shoulders can be both stylish and practical. One of the finest examples of Neapolitan suits is by Cesare Attolini, the founder of Neapolitan tailoring.

Brighter Colours

As we all know,  darker colours tend to absorb heat. If your profession permits, try experimenting with lighter and brighter hues for work, such as royal blue, mid grey, dove grey, tobacco brown, tan and cream.  For a smart weekend look, wear a light-coloured sports jacket in a bold pattern, paired with an open-neck soft collared shirt and bright chinos.

Fewer Layers

When it comes to classic attire, multiple layers are usually indicative of an exceptionally smart outfit. But during summer in Hong Kong, it is often too hot to include a jacket in your outfit. Consider wearing a linen or linen-cotton shirt, perhaps a soft-collared button-down with some formal trousers, and complete the look with loafers or sneakers. If you are feeling adventurous, opt for a long sleeve polo shirt with rolled-up sleeves and tuck it into a pair of tailored trousers. For a more relaxed look, try a plain T-shirt under a light tailored suit made of cotton or linen.

Summer Hats

Wearing a hat can seem uncomfortable, retro or eccentric for many men.  The truth is, hats have dominated fashion for over half a century, thanks to their practicality and smartness. While this accessory has fallen off the mainstream radar, a classic summer hat is an essential item that should be part of a modern gentleman’s wardrobe. For those who wish to invest in quality hats, British brand Lock & Co. is a good place to start: known as London’s oldest hat shop, the label has earned its reputation by producing exquisite hats for gentlemen.

 Wear Loafers, Sneakers and Espadrilles

Light fabrics and ventilation are two top priorities when it comes to summer footwear. For both comfort and style, unlined suede loafers are your go-to option for hot and humid weather. Featuring breathable properties and light structure, these stylish and practical shoes will have you looking on-point and keep your feet cool. Dark brown suede or tan loafers are very versatile with a formal or casual outfit.
