Oval faces

Celebrities like Beyoncé, Rihanna, Michelle Yeoh and Kim Kardashian are blessed with an oval face shape, which pairs well with almost any style of jewellery because this is a very balanced face shape. If you are also blessed with an oval face, you can opt for teardrop or oval earrings, and avoid overly long pieces, to maintain a sense of symmetry. For necklaces, go with chokers or shorter chains that sit on the collarbone to highlight the face shape further.

Tatler recommendation: Boucheron’s Quatre Radiant Edition large hoop earrings with asymmetric diamonds, or Messika’s Collier Move Link chain choker.

Round faces

Celebrities like Song Hye-kyo, Selena Gomez and Emma Stone, who have round faces, are often seen wearing jewellery that visually adds length and minimises the appearance of fullness. One example we love were the drop-shaped moonstone earrings worn by Eva Longoria for the screening of Flamin’ Hot in Los Angeles earlier this year.

Dangling, drop, and oval-shaped earrings are great choices as they create a contrast with the round shape of the face. And when it comes to necklaces, long chains or pendants that fall below the collarbone can help elongate the face.

Tatler recommendation: Chopard has a collection of drop earrings from the Haute Joaillerie collection.  Also, Chanel’s Tweed Pétale Earrings from the Tweed de Chanel high jewellery collection are ideal.

Square faces

Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kiera Knightly and Olivia Wilde are perfect examples of square faces, where the forehead, cheekbones, and jawline are of similar width. The goal with this face shape is often to soften the angular features.

Round hoops or circular earrings are ideal for achieving this effect and, similarly, curved necklaces or chokers that sit high on the neck can create a nice contrast to the square shape.

Tatler recommendation: Tribales earrings from Dior’s Rose des Vents collection.

Heart-shaped Faces

Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston have heart-shaped faces that are wider at the forehead and tapers down to a pointed chin, and this face shape calls for jewellery that helps create visual balance against this contrast between the chin and forehead.

Earrings that are wider at the bottom, such as teardrop styles, can lend the illusion of width around the jawline, which helps to balance against the naturally wider portion of the face. For necklaces, shorter chains or chokers that sit close to the neck can help visually fill in the narrower area for the same balancing effect.

Tatler recommendation: Graff’s round and oval yellow and white diamond earrings that are almost fan shaped.

Diamond Faces

Diamond faces are characterised by wide cheekbones and a more narrow forehead and chin—think Scarlett Johansson and Megan Fox—and look fantastic with earrings that balance out its proportions. Go for long, curved earrings and avoid styles that taper at the bottom. For necklaces, choose pieces that sit low on the chest to draw the eyes down, closer to the chin.

Tatler recommendation: Earrings and necklaces from Bulgari’s Diva’s Dream collection.

Having said all this, remember that while these guidelines can help you choose pieces that best flatter your face shape, the most important thing is that you feel good in what you wear. Jewellery is a form of self-expression, and there is no limit to creativity.

So, feel free to experiment, mix and match, have fun with your adornments—and let your personality shine as bright as the jewellery you wear.
