Which gemstone is associated with your birth month? What powers does it have? How can you best harness its energy? Tatler’s expert Joyce Tsang helps demystify birthstones and their properties

Ruby, whose name originates from the Latin word ruber meaning red, has long fascinated humankind with its scarlet hue. It belongs to the corundum family of gemstones, which were formed millions of years ago deep within the earth’s crust due to volcanic activity. High pressure and temperature transformed finely dispersed particles of aluminium oxide into the gemstone crystals we now know as rubies. The first ruby mines date back to 2,500 BC and were located in the Mogok region of Myanmar (erstwhile Burma).

In the ancient world, Burma was known for its high-quality rubies. Chinese merchants would trade these prized stones along the Silk Road, and kings and noble warriors alike would purchase them to adorn their armours, in the belief that the stone would offer protection in battle.

In Hindu mythology, meanwhile, the ruby symbolised wisdom, wealth and longevity. Ancient Hindus called the stone ratnaraj (“king of gems”) and believed it had healing properties and the spiritual energy to ward off evil. According to ancient Sanskrit texts, rubies were used by sages to attain enlightenment.

In China, rubies have long been cherished as talismans of good fortune. China’s last imperial family, who lived during the Qing dynasty, was said to wear elaborate ruby jewellery as a symbol of their royal status and their celestial right to rule.

The legends and fascination surrounding rubies continue to this day—so, we turned to Joyce Tsang, crystal specialist and founder of crystal shop Stone and Star, to help decode their properties and powers.

Energy influence

Rubies are known for their powerful energy influence, which is associated with vitality, creativity, passion, courage and protection. As the stone of courage, rubies are believed to increase self-confidence and empower individuals to step outside their comfort zones. The gemstone is also said to spark creativity and encourage people to follow a path of joy. Rubies are believed to help build trust in one’s own self, and to dispel anxiety.

In addition, rubies are known for their protective nature, and also for promoting self-care, compassion and harmony. The gemstone resonates with the root chakra, which helps keep the wearer grounded.

Health benefits

One of the most significant health benefits of rubies is said to be their ability to balance the body’s flow of qi, which in turn is thought to promote overall physical health, and their ability to energise our mental and emotional selves. It’s also believed that this red stone can play a role in reducing fevers, as well as in alleviating discomfort felt during menstrual cycles. While rubies are not a substitute for medical treatment, it can’t hurt to wear them as part of a holistic approach to wellness.

Who should wear them?

Those born under the signs of Cancer, Leo, Scorpio and Sagittarius are said to be particularly suited to wearing rubies, as these stones are believed to align with their personal energies and enhance their natural traits.

Rubies may also benefit individuals who are struggling with self-confidence and also those trying to overcome an addiction, as it’s said that the stone can help us break away from negative patterns and behaviours.

Rubies may also be an ideal choice for those seeking help from psychic or mental disturbances, as it’s said to offer a layer of protection against negative energies. Additionally, rubies may be beneficial for those involved in disputes, as the stone is believed to help with luck and settlement.

It is important to note that while rubies may offer certain benefits, they are not a substitute for medical or professional advice. It is always advised to consult with a healthcare professional for any physical or mental health concerns.

Wearing rubies in rings and bracelets are some of the most popular ways to wear them. When worn on hands or wrists, they are said to stimulate blood circulation, benefiting the whole body.

Another popular way to wear this red gemstone is in the form of pendants or necklaces. When worn close to the heart, rubies are thought to promote a greater sense of love, compassion and harmony, benefiting the physical body and the seven chakras.

It is important to note that the best way to wear them is in a way that feels comfortable and resonates with you personally. Whether you choose to wear a ring, a bracelet or a pendant, it is essential to select a piece that speaks to you and aligns with your intentions. By wearing them in a way that feels authentic, you may find that you are able to benefit fully from their powerful energy.

Care tips

Wash your rubies with a gentle soap and water solution, avoiding harsh chemicals that may damage the stone or its setting. After washing, be sure to dry the jewellery immediately with a soft cloth to prevent water spots. Even though rubies rank fairly high on the Mohs scale of hardness, it is still important to handle them with care. Avoid exposing your ruby jewellery to extreme temperatures, harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.

In addition to physical care, it is also recommended to energetically cleanse and recharge your rubies from time to time. One way to do this is by placing it on top of a clear quartz cluster, which is believed to transmute any stored energies and cleanse your ruby. By following these tips, you can help ensure that your fiery red stone remains beautiful and energetically vibrant for years to come.
