Melissa Chu is a yogi and eco-warrior who founded the athleisure label, Rumi X. Transforming waste into a wearable product, her colourful selection of leggings are made using a special material created from recycled plastic. We spoke to the eco-conscious entrepreneur about self-love and how to live a more mindful lifestyle.

Tell us a bit about you and what you do.

I have an eco-conscious activewear brand, called Rumi X. I founded the company in 2014, which marries my three passions in life: yoga, colours and the environment. 

What are you most passionate about?

Being a mindful citizen and living a life that considers the consequences of our actions. It’s a butterfly effect—our energy and what we consume indirectly or directly affects our community, our surroundings, our environment and ultimately, our universe.

What makes you smile? 

My pup, Kobe, and dogs in general. I love them.

Someone you look up to? 

My father, he’s a hardworking and honest man. He is fair and never judges people, has a big heart and follows his passions in life.  

The one thing you can’t live without?

Foot massages. 

On the flip side, what is one thing you could do or have less of in order to improve your life?

Being on my phone, checking emails and being connected to social media.

How do you find balance in busy Hong Kong?

Practising yoga, meditation and hiking with my pup, Kobe.

What are some of your self-care rituals (when it comes to beauty & skincare)? 

I try to get proper rest—at least eight hours of sleep each night—and drink two litres of water each day to keep my skin hydrated. I also like to do different types of masks at least three times a week, depending on how my skin feels (dehydrated, dull or tired, etc).

How do you spend your free time?

I practice SRT, spiritual response therapy and do healing on myself. I like to cook as well.

Why do you believe it’s important to take some time out for yourself? 

Living in a busy world and environment, we tend to externalise our daily lives. Sometimes we're like robots in our habits and not necessarily being present in all of our experiences.

It’s important to have some “me” time to be quiet and still, to have some inner reflection and heal yourself from the stresses of daily life. It’s always about connecting back to ourselves and finding our centre again so that we feel balanced and grounded. 

What are some of the simple things in life that you enjoy? 

Having a really good, deep conversation with a dear friend. 

What does the term “less is more” mean to you? 

Live simply with not a lot of baggage. Let go of things that weigh us down emotionally, physically and spiritually.
