As Nannette De Gaspé launches her eponymous skincare line in Hong Kong this week, we sat down with the pioneer of waterless mask technology to learn the science behind dry masking.

The idea of a ‘dry’ mask may sound counter-intuitive, but in the last two years, French-Canadian entrepreneur Nannette de Gaspé has proven otherwise. Her range of luxurious anti-ageing, waterless masks for the face, hands, décolletage and derriere have gained a cult and celebrity following, which include make-up artist Lisa Eldridge, actress Katie Holmes, and reportedly even Queen Elizabeth II.

Reviews have been extremely positive, with users saying how surprised they are to see their skin look instantly lifted and hydrated, and how easy and comfortable the mask is to wear. And the best part? You can re-use the mask up to five times.

Since the launch of her Youth Revealed and Uplift Revealed collections of waterless masks, de Gaspé has introduced a 95 per cent natural, high-absorption skincare range called The Art of Noir, which includes a cleanser, toner, exfoliator, cleansing cloths, moisturizer, lip balm, and a nifty derma-roller.

Hong Kong Tatler met with de Gaspé, who was in town for the launch of her line, for the low-down on dry masks and what else is in the pipeline:

How do dry masks work?

Dry masks use a waterless system to effectively deliver active ingredients into your skin using two technologies. First, through billions of biomimetic micro-vectors (BMVs) that contain active ingredients and take them into multiple layers of your skin, and second, a process in which we dry-print the formulations on tech fabrics.

Since BMVs are waterless, there’s no need for harsh chemicals. Also, the molecules are lipidic, which means they dissolve into the skin, so the effect is not only on the surface but deeper. What happens is the BMVs go through the barrier of the skin, helping strengthen and repair it, and goes down multiple layers, continuing to feed and nourish the skin upwards of six hours after you put on the mask.

How long should you leave them on?

Once you put the mask on, the temperature of your skin and a light massage activates the infusion of active ingredients into your skin. You leave it on for 15 minutes, then take it off and store it.

The textile can be re-worn at least three times. Some may even be able to get up to five uses out of it, so it’s worth the extra cost. A little trick I tell people is that after four or five uses, use a blow-dryer to activate any product left on the textile so you can get maximum delivery off one mask.

How are dry masks better than water-based sheet masks?

Wet masks are on average 85 per cent water and glycerin, with 5 to 7 per cent active ingredients; whereas our Youth Revealed masks are 87 per cent active ingredients and emollients.

What you're getting is a rich concentration of actives delivered into multiple layers of the epidermis. By using lipids with a very high content of actives and delivering them without water, you don’t just temporarily fill lines and wrinkles, you repair them.

How effective are they?

We did clinical studies in France on an average age of 58—most beauty companies would never do that, since it's hard to see results on older skin— but were able to demonstrate that when measured three hours after use, results showed up to 20 per cent reduction in wrinkles in one use, up to 62 per cent increase in hydration in the face, 170 per cent in the hands and up to 11 per cent improvement in pigmentation.

When the mask was worn four days in a row, we showed up to 39 per cent reduction in wrinkles, and up to 107 per cent hydration in the face, and 23 per cent improvement in pigmentation, brightening, and age spots.

What do clients love about Nannette de Gaspé?

The whole vision I have for this brand is to empower people with revolutionary cosmetic solutions that they can use on their terms. I wanted results without having to go to surgeons for expensive cosmetic procedures.

In 2016, we were the pioneer. WWD called us a disrupter. We were awarded the Best Indie Beauty Brand at London’s Cosmetics Design Beauty Industry Awards in 2017, and then WWD awarded us Product of the Year in Skincare for Youth Revealed last December.

What are the latest additions to the range?

For the last year and a half we’ve been working on skincare and came up with the concept called the Art of Noir.

We’ve come up with a formula, Concentrate Noir, that has a combination of black ingredients: Tahitian pearls, black orchids, black tea ferment (kombucha), black cumin, and a bunch of black superfoods, all with great treatment properties for the skin.

Throughout the whole line, we have an ingredient called silver mushroom and beetroot extract, which is 400 times more powerful than sodium hyaluronate—an improved version of hyaluronic acid.
