Asiatatler.com: As a Goodwill Ambassador for UNIFEM, what does your role entail?

Nicole Kidman: We do field trips where we try and go to different parts of the world and I try to get a first-hand look. The next thing we'll be doing is going to Haiti to try to support the women's shelters there because they need to be re-established as a lot of them were destroyed.

AT: If you were president for a day, what would be the first law you would enact to fix the gender inequality problem?
NK: Every young girl, wherever they are born, deserves an education.

AT: Has being a mother to a baby girl [Sunday Rose] shaped your awareness of these problems?
NK: I don't think that's shaped it because obviously I have a 17-year-old as well. It's more that we live in a very affluent Western society and [through the] countries I've visited and the stories I've heard, my awareness of violence and the enormous amount of inequality around the world and enormous amount of crimes against women that go unpunished [has increased] and that terrifies me.

AT: How do you juggle motherhood and the rest of your time?
NK: I work very little now, I've made my priority raising [my daughter] and keeping my family together and we're a very strong family unit.

AT: Will your children be brought up as Aussies or as Americans?
NK: I think as a family we're hybrids - we live in Tennessee but we've got a lot of Australian in us.

AT: Are there any signs that Sunday Rose is taking after mum and going to be an actor or taking after dad?
NK: I think she's more musical - I hope she's more musical. I'd rather her take after her dad, I love musicians.

AT: What are the roles you'd like to play in the future?
NK: I'd like to go back to the stage and do a play but I have to wait till my baby's a little bit bigger because their hours are so odd.

AT: What are your thoughts on Hong Kong?
NK: I've never been here before. I love it here. I'll be coming back because my sister lives in Singapore so this a great place for us to hook up. Good food here.

AT: You're here for an Omega event and Omega, of course, are creators of the watch that goes to the moon. Have you thought about going to the moon now that Richard Branson's got these Virgin Atlantic flights happening?
NK: I've thought about it. It's certainly intriguing but I think right now I'm pretty happy being on Earth.
