Mulier, formerly the creative global creative director of Calvin Klein, will debut his first collection at Alaia for spring 2022

Pieter Mulier has been appointed creative director of Alaia. Mulier was formerly the global creative director at Calvin Klein and Raf Simons' longtime right-hand collaborator at Simons' eponymous label, then later at Jil Sander, and at Christian Dior, where Mulier was design director.

"It is an absolute dream to join this prestigious Maison, its beautiful ateliers and its talented team," Mulier said in a statement. "Always ahead of his time and open to all arts and cultures, Azzedine Alaïa’s powerful vision has served as an inspiration, as he always sought to give the necessary time to innovative and enduring creation."

Mulier's first collection for Alaia will be spring 2022.

"Pieter stands out with remarkable technical talent and devotion to the craft, a sharp eye for construction and a sense of timeless beauty that is deeply ingrained in the creative approach of our Maison," Alaïa CEO Myriam Serrano said in a statement. "He combines these qualities with keen intellect, true generosity and unwavering humanity, which fills me with the greatest confidence in his creative leadership and innovative powers. His appointment marks the opening of an important new chapter for our Maison as we jointly seek to carry the foundational values and distinctive style of Alaïa into the future."

A graduate of Belgium's Royal Academy, where he studied architecture, dedicated followers of fashion will recognize Mulier from Dior and I, in which his appearance earned him popular acclaim as the documentary's "breakout star." In 2015, Document Journal (presciently) dubbed Mulier "undoubtedly part of the next generation of truly significant designers that will emerge over the next few years."
