Queen Elizabeth II is well-known for her diamond-drenched brooches and wore an extra special piece for her 73rd anniversary portrait with Prince Philip

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, celebrate their 73rd wedding anniversary today and have released a photograph of them both to celebrate.

The photo was taken earlier this week at Windsor Castle, and sees them opening a card from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s children.

“This new image has been released to mark the 73rd wedding anniversary of The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh tomorrow,” the caption reads. “In the photograph Her Majesty and His Royal Highness are seen looking at an anniversary card made by Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, alongside other cards and letters sent by well-wishers.”

As she sits on the sofa, the Queen wears her chrysanthemum-style brooch, which has been in her jewellery collection for decades.

She wore the same diamond-and-sapphire accessory when she was photographed on her honeymoon in Hampshire back in 1947, as well as in pictures released to mark the couple’s 60th wedding anniversary in 2007.

Her Majesty, 94, was a 21-year-old princess when she married Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten at Westminster Abbey on 20 November 1947. The duke retired from public duties in 2017 and they have been married longer than any British sovereign and consort.
