This year, springtime scents are all about flowers - with iris, rose and jasmine leading the way - matched with a general feeling of freshness. A hint of sensuality is also in the air

perfume.jpgWith their warm, spicy notes, the deeper, heavier more intense scents of winter are slowly giving way to springtime fragrances, bringing lighter, airier aromas to the perfume aisle. This year sees a line-up of light, floral Eau de Toilette and Eau de Parfum fragrances, with a crisp, fresh hint, making them ideal for mid-season days and evenings.

Mediterranean blooms
Lots of brands have focused on floral notes with blooms typical to the Mediterranean, especially in springtime. Roberto Cavalli's "Paradiso Azzurro," for example, pays homage to Italian coastal landscapes with notes of lavender, jasmine and cypress wood.

Marc Jacobs "Daisy Edition Blush" gives pride of place to the mimosa, another plant evoking the Mediterranean and Provence. Here, the flower is matched with lily of the valley, honeysuckle, white waterlily and bergamot, with iced pear adding a touch of freshness.

Rose rules
The rose is the star flower of the perfume world, even more so than jasmine. No matter what species or variety, it's one of the most prestigious and widely used flowers among perfumers. Spring 2016 is no exception, with a slew of scents based on this queen of flowers.

Yves Saint Laurent, for example, mixes violet leaves, neroli, wild rose, Damask rose, lily of the valley and peony in a fresh floral scent for "Paris Premières Roses - Eau de Printemps." Dolce & Gabbana has built a springtime fragrance around Turkish rose absolute, with "Dolce Rosa Excelsa." Giorgio Armani has matched two roses -- May rose and Turkish rose -- in "Si Rose Signature," and Kenzo has put Bulgarian rose at the heart of "Flower by Kenzo Eau Florale."

Exotic flowers
Some labels already have their sights fixed firmly on summer, with exotic scents that take the senses to far-flung paradise destinations.

This season, Britney Spears goes exotic in a homage to Hawaii -- or Maui, more precisely, the second largest island in the archipelago. Her latest fragrance, "Maui Fantasy," comes with notes of bird of paradise flower, matched with pink grapefruit, passion fruit, hibiscus petals, cyclamen, orange blossom, Hawaiian monoi, vanilla and coconut.

Yves Rocher has a new "Pop'Exotic" Eau de Toilette, a fruity cocktail bursting with refreshing exotic flowers.

Flowers of the world
Some perfume houses and beauty brands have brought ingredients from the four corners of the globe together in their fragrance, using flowers like black orchid, Arabian jasmine and osmanthus.

Renowned noses Anne Flipo and Dominique Ropion chose to base Lancôme's "La Vie Est belle l'Eau de Toilette Florale" on osmanthus absolute, from a plant native to Asia. This far-flung aroma is mixed with rose, violet leaves, mimosa, freesia, iris Pallida concentrate and patchouli.

Hugo Boss has also went global for the "Extreme" version of its "Hugo Woman" scent, which blends notes of red Himalayan grass, Arabian jasmine, boysenberry and black tea with a touch of osmanthus flower. Similarly, Tom Ford's "Black Orchid Eau de Toilette" brings together black truffle, ylang-ylang, bergamot, blackcurrant, black orchid, lotus wood, patchouli, incense, vetiver and vanilla.
