The lacquered white dial gives the classic Speedy a wonderful modern touch
Omega has finally revealed the Moonwatch that Daniel Craig wore to the Planet Omega Exhibition in New York in November last year. The Speedmaster, which was created in 1957 but rose to fame in 1969 when it became the first wristwatch to land on the moon (hence the ‘Moonwatch’ nickname), now comes in a rare white dial complete with white hands.
The entire surface of the dial is given a glossy lacquered finish, which is a first for the signature step dial of the Speedmaster. The black outline of the hands and the black applied indexes stand out against this pristine background, ensuring superb legibility.

The choice of white is inspired by the astronaut's space suits. It is also a reference to the Alaska I prototype, a secret Nasa project to design the perfect space watch, where a white dial was discovered to provide a particularly effective thermal reflection coefficient. The red for the Speedmaster name as well as the elongated tip of the seconds hand are a nod to the protective red case of the Alaska I timepiece.
