The entrepreneur and founder of RCANO speaks to us on how he’s set to change the scope of menswear in Hong Kong

IMG_0863.jpgRafael Raya Cano is a model turned entrepreneur who founded RCANO in 2014 out of a frustration with the lack of choice and variety in the local menswear market. Rafa as he’s known by his friends, sought to create a label that infused Mexican and Asian design elements into traditional menswear clothing. Whether it’s through colourful stitching, a patterned lapel or a mix of fabrics and textures, it’s apparent that Rafa is clearly enjoying his role at the helm of his label’s design. With his sister Tamara overseeing the businesses operations, I spoke to Rafa about his love for Hong Kong and how he plans to take RCANO further afield:

My first visit to Hong Kong was in 2005 while I was studying in Beijing and I loved how the city was a combination of skyscrapers, greenery and east meets west. I transferred to HKUST and I haven’t left! I consider Hong Kong my second home and part of my family are now based here, along with my business and some of my close friends.

RCANO is a menswear label that combines contemporary design with high quality craftsmanship, and a strong attention to detail.

My proudest accomplishment to date was earlier this year when I was asked to particpate in the International Forum of Mexican Talent for young entrepreneurs which gave me the opportunity to stage my first fashion show. Seeing all the models in my designs along with the positive feedback I received from guests was one of the most satisfying moments of my career to date.

The best part about running your own business is that each day is different, some days are easier than others but there is always something to be done, problems to solve and deadlines to meet, but each day is always exciting and trust me there is never a dull moment.

My advice to budding entrepreneurs is that you need to start by really getting to know your market and target audience. In the beginning, do as much research as you can, create a smart business plan so that you can determine the structure and growth of your business, build a team with like-minded people that will help to drive your business forward. Most importantly, believe in yourself and your product, and don’t take no for an answer.

IMG_0973.jpgI believe RCANO stands apart from our competitors because I’ve created a brand that has catered to a niché market, essentially people who are looking for high quality clothing without the mark up, I’ve created pieces that helps you stand out, for all the right reasons.

My mother is my biggest inspiration, she always encouraged and pushed me to go after my dreams. She also studied fashion design so I like to think that I’m carrying on her legacy.

When I first started my business it was tough but I kept reminding myself that good things don’t come easy. I think some people don’t quite understand how drawn out the whole process can be in terms of raising capital to get the business off the ground, trademarking, labelling, putting a team together, finding the right marketing mix and so forth. Looking back, the only thing I wish I had done differently is that I wish I had started sooner.

My end goal is to have RCANO carried in different countries, obviously I want to have a brand that is distinctly recognisable, I want someone to see a shirt or a tie and know that its from RCANO.

My words to live by are taken from Coco Chanel: “Simplicity is the key note of all true elegance.”
