A lesson in how to master social media modelling, as evidenced these young trailblazers at our exclusive Generation T launch soiree last Friday night

In an era when your presence is ubiquitous in the digital world, showing off your best side in front of the camera is, quite simply put, obligatory.

But the truth is: whether it’s pixels or film, the potential for a snapshot amplifying any miniscule imperfections on even the most flawless face is high. And, let’s face it—not every fashion influencer or selfie queen online are necessarily the most stunning. What they have, however, are the right skills – it’s all about securing great lighting, discovering your signature smile and knowing how to work your outfit.

To help you out, we drew inspiration from the movers and shakers who captured their favourite moments at our rock-themed Generation T launch event that took place last Friday. Here’s how to work your angles for any snap-worthy moment:

Make a move

Jump.jpg

Jumping shots have been trending in recent years, as seen in wedding parties, actors, to even political figures. To master a jumping motion in a photo, as demonstrated by entrepreneur Ivan Pun in this group shot, requires effort.

Whilst you’re in the air, try to create shapes with your body instead of merely jumping up and down or striking a funny pose—it will appear as if you are floating awkwardly, rather than jumping. Don’t forget to relax your face when in motion – the last thing you want is a tight expression, so try to think of something that makes you laugh whilst jumping for a more carefree touch.

Work on your facial expression

Feiping-Chang.jpg

If you are blessed with flawless features like Feiping Chang, then chances are you won’t need to spend much time to work on your best camera-friendly look. For the rest of us, a rule of thumb is to fake it till you make it.

For people with thin lips, part them slightly and blow lightly to create the illusion of full ones. Those with round faces should turn the head slightly to one side and avoid facing the camera straight on.

Go towards the light

if natural lighting is our friend, then flash will be our trusted companion in dark settings. With the right angle and a simple blend of monochromatic shades, fashion stylist Tianyo Mayao stands out effortlessly in this snapshot.

Work your outfit

Jessica-Lee.jpg

So congratulations – you’re wearing the perfect outfit and are looking on point. But the question is: do you know how to work it? Jessica Lee, rising star in Hong Kong’s performing arts scene, clearly knows how to show off by making the most of this dramatic flowing skirt — her movements prove mesmerising both on stage and off.

Go natural

Natural.jpg

The most flattering photos are often created when ‘less is more’ comes to play. In other words, aim for candid and honest portraits that show people who you are. Forget striking red-carpet poses with the likes of the ‘over-the-shoulder posture’. Instead, try to relax, share a funny memory with your friends during photo-taking, or glance towards the side instead of looking straight into the camera.

Seek inspiration from this group shot starring Antonia Li, Ruth Chao, Eleanor Lam and Feiping Chang with their natural grins and candid body language.

Find your signature smile

Signature-smile.jpg

Ever realise how celebrities are always caught on camera with the same smile time after time? Simple answer: it’s because they have figured out what works for them. In case you haven’t mastered yet, grab your phone and take as many selfies as you need to until you find a ‘signature’ smile that you feel truly happy and comfortable with.

Lucky for model Jamie Xia, her winning grin in this photo tells us she knows exactly how it’s done.

Get Instagram-worthy props

When in doubt, look for cool props. As seen in this photo of entrepreneur Victoria Chow, even a photo featuring a plain white background can be spiced up by a carefree pose with Instagrammable props such as a champagne bottle and a colourful glass (and of course, a beautiful clutch).
