We go behind the scenes with the London-based fashion blogger in the run-up to Fashion's Night Out

London-born Susanna Lau – better known by her online moniker Susie Bubble, behind the acclaimed fashion blog Style Bubble – has a special connection with Hong Kong. For one, her family were originally from here, and she often comes back to the city "to do all the things you do in Hong Kong – shop and eat." This time, Lau is back to do her part with Lane Crawford, the department store exclusively presenting Hong Kong’s first-ever Fashion’s Night Out this Friday on September 7. In our video interview, we met with her to discuss her views on Hong Kong style, following (or indeed not following) the trends, and the thought process behind her colourful mannequin displays for Lane Crawford IFC.

The thing with Lau is, there’s no easy way to neatly define her own style. "Eclectic" is the word she offers, which perhaps best describes the ensemble she has chosen for the day’s busy session of powering through the department store, picking out a frenzy of Proenza Schouler, Phillip Lim, Theory, Tory Burch and Carven to dress up her mannequins in a riot of textures, popping Fruit Loop colours and layers. It’s an apt representation of Lau’s own personal style, however hard that may be to pin down.

Among the mannequins, there are polo shirts beneath sheer dresses, topped with thick knit sweaters and loud leather jackets, with a woollen scarf wrapped around to boot. "It’s pretty much how I would wear things," she says. "I’m often seen in at least five different layers." The looks she has styled, Lau emphasises, aren’t quite reflective of the current Autumn/Winter trends out there, either.

"For Autumn/Winter, it’s actually looking quite sombre – there’s lot of blood reds and purple hues, really rich colours. But [my looks] play more on the textures that are coming in – we’re seeing a lot of faux furs, a lot of knobbly tweeds, a lot rich, textured woven materials. That's what I’m looking at in term of reflecting the autumn winter trends," she explains. "The mannequins are a reflection of my personal style rather than a blank replica of what’s on the catwalk."
