In need of a weekend getaway but want to avoid the hassles of flying? Luckily, Hong Kong has no shortage of places that feel worlds away from the urban landscape that are within easy reach from the city centre. Need a bit of inspo for your next weekend break? These are the best day trips from Hong Kong that our editors love

From Lantau Island to Central

"For visitors, I always recommend the classic day out: MTR to Tung Chung, cable car to Big Buddha, bus to Tai O fishing village then Mui Wo, then ferry to Central before finishing up by taking the tram to an evening meal (preferably dim sum) somewhere on the Island. A fun day out that takes you through some of Hong Kong’s best views and showcases the city’s amazing public transport. But if it’s just me, I love a day out running in Shing Mun Country Park."—Lauren James, Deputy Editor

From Discovery Bay to Mui Wo

"Take a ferry to Discovery Bay and do the hike from there to Mui Wo. It’s a beautiful hike that goes past banana plantations, villages and local farms, followed by epic mountain and sea views before descending into sleepy, sunny Mui Wo beach. A drink at China Beach Club is always welcome, but my personal favourite spot on the island is Bahce Turkish Restaurant near the ferry pier for their authentic, homey Middle Eastern food."—Coco Marett, Lifestyle Editor

Lamma Island

"While nothing quite beats a weekend-long camping trip on the beaches of Tai Long Wan to feel like you’ve truly escaped the city, a slightly easier destination that will make you feel just as relaxed is Lamma Island. Offering its own unique and laid-back vibe, the island is a breath of fresh air compared to the city’s crowded streets. I like to take the ferry to Sok Kwu Wan and then follow the family trail all the way along to Yung Shue Wan village. It’s an easy (and dog-friendly) walk that offers stunning island views and the promise of a cold beer and a seafood meal at the end."—Annie Simpson, Digital Content Director

Tai Kwun

"For anyone that doesn't live on Hong Kong Island, this one's for you! I’m slightly obsessed with Tai Kwun—whether I'm eating at Madame Fu (the interiors alone are enough to make me drool!), having a drink at Behind Bars or touring the old jail cells—it’s a one stop shop for a full day of fun, and if you’re an Instagram lover like me, it’ll provide more than enough photo ops for you to pick from!"—Tara Sobti, Society Editor

Sai Kung

"Taking a boat out from Sai Kung to Ham Tin Wan's pristine beach and then coming back for seafood on the dock is the best way to feel like you've left Hong Kong without actually leaving the city."—Rosie Lai, Senior Fashion Editor

From Tai Wai to Tai Mei Tuk

"Explore a road less travelled, further into the new territories, where there is a 20km bike trail from Tai Wai to Tai Mei Tuk. I love plugging in my earphones, cycling my way down and enjoying the beautiful scenery. When you reach Tai Mei Tuk, there is what seems like an endless bridge with a reservoir on one side and the sea on the other."—Kristy Or, Associate Editor

Tai O

"Back in my uni days, I was an NGO intern assigned to monitor Chinese white dolphins in the Tai O waters. So every other morning that summer, I woke up at 5:30, took the MTR and a village bus all the way from the south to Tung Chung, before venturing into the heart of Tai O Village, and hiked up Fu Shan. Trust me, it's worth the effort when you get just one glimpse of the elusive creatures. Tea cakes and tofu puddings are always a plus when you head downhill."—Zabrina Lo, Associate Features Editor
