Here’s what you missed: Tatler community members gathered in Shek Tong Tsui for the grand reveal of Design Trust’s first physical studio space. Donated by ZS Hospitality chairman and Design Trust board member Elizabeth Chu, the 1500 sq ft office and studio space will serve as a multi-functional arena for showcasing the work of the foundation’s grantees. Co-designed by Paul Tse and Evelyn Ting, co-founders of New Office Works and Marisa Yiu, co-founder and executive director of Design Trust, the new venue will also be a reflection of the positive role design plays in the wider community.

“This extraordinary act of generosity from Elizabeth marks a milestone moment for us,” says Yiu. “Our organisation finally has a new home. With astounding programmes, mentorship and impact in the cultural and research community for our city and beyond, I am pleased to share this moment as a true milestone against all the recent challenges that have surrounded us.”

Since 2014, the grant funding and community platform has recognised and supported 523 grantees, fellows and mentee designers. Following the studio’s opening on October 3, Design Trust launched its inaugural showcase on October 8, which highlighted the achievements of grant recipients old and new. Charting 169 grantees’ journey with the foundation, the showcase highlighted Hong Kong creators, including Elaine Yan Ling Ng, Adonian Chan, Soilworm Lai and Mic Leong, as well as international grant recipients, by focusing on themes such as Hong Kong design and identity, play and participation, heritage, and innovation. A special series of thematic design dialogues called “Design Trust Trialogues” will also be curated in the studio to connect further with design communities in the Greater Bay Area and the rest of the world.
