When Tatler secured an exclusive interview with megastar, businessman and creative director Pharrell Williams for the March issue, we already knew the artist would be flying to Hong Kong for Art Basel. What we didn’t know was the pandemonium—or shall we say, fan-demonimum—that would ensue

In March, the superstar arrived in the city to launch A Journey Through Gems, his second sale on Joopiter, the digital-first auction house that he founded. The private sale featured high jewellery pieces Williams commissioned and created with Lorraine Schwartz, the legendary designer behind statement pieces worn by Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian, Angelina Jolie and a host of other Hollywood celebrities.

On March 22 it all came to a head: in partnership with HSBC, a long-time supporter of the cultivation and preservation of the arts, the grand event finally kicked off. VIPs were invited to the Sky Lounge at The Upper House for a special edition of Tatler’s House Stories, where Williams, Schwartz and executive vice president of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) Tom Moses discussed the value in investing in gemstones, the inspiration behind the private sale and how Schwartz and Williams have maintained a successful working relationship for over two decades. Behind thick glass cases heavily guarded by security laid some of the sale items, which added an extra wow-factor to the ritzy affair.

Ahead of the talk, as soon as the paparazzi flashes began to go off, everyone knew the guests of honour had arrived. Williams floated into the room dressed in a quilted black matrix-style coat, baseball hat and his signature 25-carat Tiffany and Co sunglasses. A few selfies and hugs in, the speakers made their way to their seats, and it was showtime. Moderated by Tatler Asia’s regional head of content and Tatler Hong Kong’s editor-in-chief Jacqueline Tsang, the panel dived right in to the juicy details.

“This collection is about being the brightest in the room,” said Williams. [Every piece of the collection] is made with the intention of being the best of the best. When it comes to this jewellery, if you like it, and it does something to your beating heart, and you can afford it—you should have it,” he said to laughter from the audience.

Williams and Schwartz discussed finding their groove together, with Williams crediting Schwartz for changing his perspective on jewellery.

“Through the love of jewellery, Pharrell has become my family,” said Schwartz. “We met in 2001 [when I was a diamond dealer] and was just starting my design journey. Pharrell was with [his band] The Neptunes and was building a culture around him. Being around that was so inspiring to me for my own design world.  I had a lot of big artists come to me, but obviously, Pharrell was my favourite,” she said, grinning.

“Luckily, [Lorraine and I] didn’t go avant-garde in the design or aesthetic [of the pieces we created],” Williams said. “We went avant-garde with the quality and craftsmanship [of the pieces]. That’s what I learnt from Lorraine early on: it’s the quality of the stones and the quality of the setting [that matter]. It’s allowed the pieces [we made] to age well and be timeless.”

The duo were full of praise for Moses, who flew in from New York. “Tom is our guru,” said Schwartz. “GIA is the only standard that any diamond in the world is valued by.” Moses chimed in “Remember: when buying gemstones, don’t buy them based on the size; buy the best quality you can afford. In time you will appreciate it more, and it will appreciate more too.”

The question on everyone’s lips that evening was: why Hong Kong? “We love the other cities, but this is where things happen,” said Williams to deafening cheers from the audience.  Schwartz agreed: “I love Hong Kong. I love the people and the energy is inspiring.” Other topics discussed included gender neutrality in jewellery, how objects carry energy, advice for young collectors and giving reverence back to creators.

Afterwards, it was time for dinner across the hall at Salisterra, at which Japanese contemporary artist Takashi Murakami was also a guest, and where the crème de la crème of Hong Kong's creative scene including Tyson Yoshi, Angelica Cheung, Federico Tan, Emily Lam-Ho were invited to break bread with the icons. Given that Williams and Schwartz were in the building, the hotel pulled out all the stops. Fresh flowers, velvet ropes and amped up security made it feel like a movie set, and the energy was a tremendous reminder of the star power Hong Kong has to offer.

At dinner, Williams delivered an unforgettable toast: “No pandemic can stop the amazing and beautiful culture in Hong Kong. If I look back 30 years ago to when I first started in the music industry, I couldn’t have imagined [this private sale or what I have achieved]. This is a dream. The only thing I ask is: don’t wake me up. Cheers!”
