The exclusive Banksy “Banksquiat” work––inspired by Jean-Michel Basquiat––is set to fetch up to US$72,000 at auction this month

Artsy.net has this week unveiled an exciting new partnership with the up and coming East London auction house, Tate Ward. The Tate Ward x Artsy present By Collectors For Collectors will feature a rare Banksy Basquiat (2019) work that is set to lead the collaborative auction house. The rare screen print, which will be going under the hammer for the first time ever, is expected to realise up to US$72,000 at auction.

True to its name, the exclusive screen print pays homage to well-loved American artist and prodigy Jean-Michel Basquiat, who was best known for his groundbreaking graffiti work that was recognised as a form of high art in the late 1970s. It also highlights the recent commodification of the late Basquiat, which, in true Banksy form, commodifies Basquiat himself.

“TV has made going to the theatre seem pointless, photography has pretty much killed painting,” Banksy said in a previous statement in response to his inflammatory place in the art and political world, “but graffiti has remained gloriously unspoilt by progress.”

Aside from the rare “Banksquiat” work and other pieces by the infamous graffiti artist, The Tate Ward x Artsy present By Collectors For Collectors online auction will also include works by other legendary street and pop artists, including KAWS, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and other global contemporary artists.
