Featuring lawn games and live music, this latest iteration by the Central harbourfront looks to get people up and moving this summer

From the time it opened in November of last year up until the end of April, socially-distanced outdoor cinema The Grounds was one of the hottest tickets in town, being one of the few places in Hong Kong where large numbers of people could safely gather to share a communal experience, whether it was to watch a movie, enjoy a live music performance, or even participate in a yoga class.

If the social media buzz and instantly sold-out tickets that were part and parcel of The Grounds is anything to go by, its latest summer reincarnation as The Lawn Club is sure to see the same level of hype. Located in AIA Vitality Park by the Central harbourfront, The Lawn Club bills itself as "the ultimate socially-distanced garden party", keeping the white picket fenced four-person "pods" that The Grounds utilised to maintain social distancing, while forgoing the passive cinema experience of its predecessor for an interactive mix of lawn games and live music.

Among the games on offer are the likes of pétanque (a variation of bocce where metal balls are thrown towards a target ball), Putterball (a cross between mini golf and bowling), and ladder ball (where two balls tied by a string are tossed at a ladder rack), as well as croquet, cornhole, and giant Jenga. The games are booked by guests in their pods via QR code, with chaperones guiding each group through the ins and outs of the respective games.

Also ordered via QR code are food and drinks. While the food offerings at The Grounds consisted of vendors from the nearby Basehall, The Lawn Club goes all in with Shake Shack's famous burgers, crinkle fries and hot dogs. In terms of liquid refreshment, guests can pick from Peroni beer, Four Pillars gin and tonic, Aperol spritzes, BubbleMe hard seltzer, and Jim Beam bourbon, as well as a selection of wines that includes the Hong Kong debut of Pepperjack from Australia's Treasury Wine Estates.

Live entertainment will be a big part of the agenda at The Lawn Club, with events programming that includes DJs and performance artists on the main stage; while sports lovers can tune into the biggest sports events of the season, from tennis Grand Slams and rugby tours, to European football championships.

Tickets for a four-person pod start from HK$600, although guests have the option of upgrading to a prime pod with plush sofa chairs for HK$1,000. Guests would be wise to bring a fan, an umbrella, and plenty of sunscreen to combat Hong Kong's inclement summer weather. Book online here
