5. W.W. Chan & Sons Tailor

Mr Chan, who founded the Hong Kong store in 1948, is one of just a handful of Shanghainese tailors in town who cut his teeth in the widely revered “red gang”—a generation of tailors made famous in early twentieth-century Shanghai who mixed Chinese, Russian and British tailoring influences.

The result is a strong heritage and exacting standards of craftsmanship that are reflected in the construction of top-notch suits. Chan, who handed the business down to his son Peter, swears by traditional processes in the art of creating a bespoke men’s suit.

They offer full floating canvas construction, hand-stitched lapels and as many basted fittings as necessary. Peter continues to resist the temptation of mechanised production, and all cutting and tailoring are still done on-site. That’s a step beyond even most Savile Row tailors today.

Suits: HK$16,000 to HK$21,000
Duration: Six weeks
